Never Was That Midnight Dreary (A Halloween Valentine)
She bought some Lindt and Cabernet;
I bought bulk candy but no wine
and watched her pay then drive away—
she left in her car; I in mine.
I followed her back home that day
(oh, sheepish boy—against the rule!)
but when I knocked, I heard her say,
“My kids will soon be home from school
but in the meantime, come inside.”
I dropped my candy on the floor!
That night, I hoped she’d open wide
once spooks stopped knocking at her door.
The kids came home; they’re hers and mine.
Each Halloween, my valentine
will share her chocolates and her wine
and trick-and-treating, we’ll entwine.
