False Rainbows
Paint the whole world with a rainbow, a song that childlike awe inspired.
Celebrating renewal, seven different strands united side by side.
Promise of light, and that storms pass on after torrential rain.
That eventually all will be washed clean and calm again.
That year particles traced menacing arcs with the potential to impair.
Bland masks and test kits, a refuge of debris to combat fear.
A naive symbol hijacked to express solidarity and support.
Subliminal messaging for clapped heroes not the concerned, tired or fraught.
They should be fleeting, ethereal harbingers of change.
Not get old, faded, cracked on window panes.
The chalked streets and collaborations blanched bare.
Along with restraint, good will and the spotlight on those who cared.
Detached from consequences all resources focused on a cure.
Our need to protect markets, feel free, touch once more.
Wildlife, sustainability, and peace forgotten in the rush to be done.
Collective action echoes fainter yet the climate pandemic rumbles on.
