Autumn Leaves

Autumn Leaves

In October as winds turn chill,
the oaks withdraw their chlorophyll
deep within their mighty veins--
Outwardly, no leaf retains
its former glory of summer green--
Autumn leaves shall disappear
while solid trunks alone remain
enduring seasons of freezing rain--
but what does Mother Nature mean
by turning inward once a year?
Even so must I in times of grief
surrender leaf after yellow leaf,
counting rings of inner pain
in hail, sleet, or freezing rain--
