Mass Shootings II
We were running late
to get Allie to school
and I almost didn’t notice
the police cordon
until we were right there.
Some parents I knew
were standing there
shocked, horrified,
then I heard the gunshots.
All I could think of
for the first few moments
was ‘thank god we were late.’
I hadn’t heard this much gunfire
since Afghanistan.
Of course I knew what it was.
Another attack on our kids at school.
A lot of cops standing around.
A few of the parents
trying to get past them,
so fearful for their kids
they’d try to get inside
if the cops didn’t stop them.
I knew how they felt.
I touched the Glock in my holster
in the back of my waist,
if it was needed
I’d use it to save my kid.
It took a while until they got the shooter.
He killed seven kids, wounded nine,
killed two teachers, wounded two.
A local tv reporter
kept saying over and over:
“It’s the second mass shooting today
and it’s only 10 a.m.
We’re in for a rough day.
It was hard to believe
this was the country I grew up in.
When I was a kid
there were only one or two
mass shootings a week.
Now. Holy shit. Three or four a day.
I believe in the right to bear arms.
Hell, I own a few guns.
But killing kids every day gotta stop.
It’s time to call mass shootings
terrorist attacks
and take emergency measures.
Require a license to buy a gun.
Twenty years in prison
for illegal gun owners.
I’d give up my guns
if I couldn’t get a license.
Not that I’d like it,
but we’ve got to protect our kids
from the lunatics
who want to kill them.
