When You Have to Say Good-bye

When You Have to Say Good-bye

So many times when I was young
I needed help and you were there
A gentle smile, a tender touch
A soothing hug to show you care

But now you're gone, your time has passed
And still the memories will ever last
It's just so hard to have to say good-bye

As I grew up you made the time
To be with me no matter what
And yet I find I still want more
But now that door's forever shut

And so I grieve for what I've lost
You know I'd pay whatever cost
Just so I would not have to say good-bye

I always knew the day would come when I would face an empty chair
Still as I look out on that space I can’t believe that you’re not there
The weight that’s on my shoulders grows, the sorrow deep within me flows
It hurts so hard to have to say good-bye

When came the day that I was wed
I saw the pride upon your face
As one by one my kids were born
They felt your warm loving embrace

And your capacity for giving showed me how I should be living
I just don’t want to have to say good-bye

Then it was time to care for you; it was my turn, I did my best
And though you tried to stay for me, you are now finally at rest
The times we shared, the fun we had
I find I’m smiling though I am sad
The time has come for me to say good-bye

But in my heart and in my soul
You are the part that makes me whole
And while your face no more I’ll see
You’ll always be the best in me
So as the tears flow down my cheek
I’ll stand up tall and loudly speak
That I will never truly say good-bye
No, I will never ever say good-bye
