Whether or Not

Whether or Not

“Whether or not they exist, we’re slaves to the gods.”
(Soares, The Book of Disquiet)

And so we think again
that the sky is full of our fate
Cool powers look down, laugh,
shake their heads.
Poor humans, so blind,
most of us, to the gem
of life right before our eyes,
the miracle of the uterus,
the curling leaf, the kitten’s fur,
nothing we can truly comprehend.
Beginnings and endings abound,
the bleached coral, the melting ice,
the victims of our carelessness
homeless, scorched, or washed away.
It is the cat o’ nine tails,
handed to us by those unfeeling gods
and we’ll say we deserved it,
or we’ll say nothing at all.
