Dead-End Roads

Dead-End Roads

The road looked smooth, not very steep,
with broad, paved shoulders there to keep
the travelers safe along the path
without a threat of harm or wrath,
without restraint of rail or fence.

Beyond a signpost up ahead
are couples lost and long since dead.
Our signposts also have been passed—
we had no warning which was last
and might have chilled our confidence.

Our paths diverged but still looked fair
though fog and dust had choked the air
so venturers could not see past,
and yet, we wandered past the last
where we’d commence without defense.

Too often we became storm-tossed;
each took a road more traveled by.
Diverging routes, but at what cost
since every turn would leave us lost
and none would made a difference.
