Rat-a-Tat-Tat

Rat-a-Tat-Tat

A rat a tat tat,
A little dis an’ dat,
Beware the dancing midnight
Light balls,
And the crossing of the black cat.

See the shadow of the scarecrow on the hill?
Hear the calling of the crow?
Do the footsteps on your front porch
Give you a tingling chill?
Behold how the face on the pumpkin
Throws its disturbing glow!

Hear the rumbling knock on your front door?
Feel the presence in your nighttime room?
It's such a great thrill not knowing what lies in store!
Watch the shadow dance with your straw broom!

Hear your name whispering on the night wind?
Now is the time to pay your dues!
Experience a rush of trepidation without end,
As to its source, you haven't a clue.

Tonight, my corpse lies silent in the grave,
But of your presence I am still aware.
In reality, I’m not in darkness as I lay,
Still yet I live,
I do declare!

For more than thirty years, you despised me when I was alive,
You secretly desired to see me starve in the streets,
When at my worst
Still yet, I thrive!

I ne’er spoke a single foul word to you,
Never a single sin in any action,
Yet for me, you were thrilled at my life misfortunes
It's true,
On my dying day, you finally found your unhinged satisfaction.

I hated the way you spoke foul words behind my back.
I despised the way you bore false witness,
Turning my family and my wife against me!
Now in the October gloom I’ve returned to make my attack,
Hear my laughing voice in the night at your terror misery?
