Yaupon Leaves

Yaupon Leaves

Look closely at the world around you
From a wide frame it speaks of gradients of gray
With neon glow signs selling processed food trays.
But in the corners and cracks, the precipices between
The street signs and drainage gaps, lies the green weeds
And vines and trees.

Yaupon leaves lie in bunches among the cement tracks
Ever green in the winter breeze, the summer heat
Where a skittering hare might seek cover beneath.
And knotted oaks soar into the air, with crooked branches
Twisting as measures in time where a small dove might perch
Before departing with echoed claps of flapping wings into the
Blue, cloudless sky above.

Look closely, we might see a new world
Before us, before you, living within the gaps.
