Glimpsing Another
The octopus is photographed underwater
lone traveler on a backdrop of blue
deep-sea alien dotted with iridescent rings.
In the photo
a swish of bubbles around the body
eight arms lacerating the liquid—
its body, like mine, made of that liquid.
Bulbous orange head
rectangular pupils taking in light
the suggestion of thoughts and worldview.
How can this thing appear so alien
when I, too, am a thing with arms
a creature with pupils taking in light
a lone traveler on a backdrop of blue?
