Approaching 2026

Approaching 2026

In backyard trees
remaining pecans
catch low sunlight,
glow like tiny lanterns.
On the ground
broken shells crunch underfoot.
Days to come will be far removed
from blistering summer heat
and iridescent puddles
left by afternoon rain.

We are bound for darkness,
prepare solstice fires
to ward off a stark fate,
but our matches are damp.
Efforts to bring light fail.

We burn inside instead—
fireplaces, candles,
comfort us until spring.
