You’re Never Too Old
After 32 years of wedded abuse–
I finally realized that my life was worth more.
Don’t get me wrong–I was blessed with
two wonderful sons. I will never regret them.
Yes, there were some fun times, some good times.
But lurking behind each of those moments
was a shadow, an echo of fear touching
my smile, darkening the waking hours,
haunting my dreams.
Thankfully, my sons and a friend intervened.
They gave me the strength to find my courage,
to raise my voice, to stand up for myself.
I freed myself from the shadows, walked into
the light, and pursued the personal dreams
that had lingered until hopelessness
quashed them.
Gaining independence in my fifties, I went back
to school and worked hard to earn my
Master’s degree.
I found a new teaching job far away from the
places which daily reminded me of former fears.
Despite loss of friends and home, I thrived.
I made new friends, a new home, and fought
to overcome the nightmares and shadows of
my former life.
I met a man who is my soul-mate. He encourages,
loves, supports my endeavors, and gives me strength
on days when I am about to slip back into fear and doubt.
We face each day together, loving one another unconditionally.
Years ago, I would have never expected to be happy
again. I had given up.
Are you there too? Don’t give up.
There is someone out there who will help you. Maybe it’s
a friend, a family member, or even a shelter, but there
IS someone to help.
Reach out. Begin again. Yes, it will be hard. You may face
hunger, you may be afraid, but don’t turn back. Push forward.
Step out of the shadows, away from the shouts and echoes of the past.
You are never too old to start over or to reach for your dreams.
Walk into the light of a new beginning.
Greet the new year with freedom’s.smile.
