A Life of Resistance
Occupation.
We are in charge.
You must comply.
There is no justice at the end of a gun---only death.
Years later,
she still sees the German grabbing the toddler by his feet,
smashing his head against the wall.
Why? The hungry child was playing in the gutter.
Innocent, unaware of the evil around him,
that was all he could do to resist.
“I’m alive against the law,” she said.
Hers was a life of resistance,
going to school and learning against the law,
living against the law,
‘cause the law wants you dead.
We said: “Never forget.”
So today, we remember.
When resistance seems futile---resist anyway
Rebel against evil,
fight for truth, decency, hope,
press forward with love and kindness.
Give bread to the hungry,
Take a hot meal to those in need,
hoping this evil will end one day.
We’re still here.
We resist. We persist.
